@Jupitroid Japanese people have it right? what do you mean, environmental wise or in stipulations of smoking? They once had the worst ecosystem of post WWII industrialization and quick-paced development e.g. dead Tokyo bay, minamata disease. It took them 50+ yrs to remedy it. Also, lacking meat animals on the islands, and their belief that oil would run out, they ate healthier sans oil and sans much red meat.

@Jupitroid Yah, I guess stop being macho would solve the problem. I reckon they still smoke in buildings and houses, hard to kick the habit. Also, documents indicate the high ratio in males mostly were from rural areas, city people only make 30% of Chinese population. There are a lot of sexists in rural areas, for one, male are physically more capable of farming and so in rural ares. For two, feudalism root. China didnt have industrial revolution. Just invasion of Eight-Nation Alliance and WWII

  • Jupitroid says:

@wuyiting Maybe the macho smoking males of China who won’t let their wives have female babies will die of lung cancer and even things out. Or maybe they should stop being so macho and both problems would just go away. I reckon the Japanese herbivore men have it right.

@wuyiting I’m guessing that Chinese civilization was much more in balance with nature before the industrial revolution hit it. I mean, I reckon it would be hard to survive for thousands of years without having some kind of unity with the land. There were probably Chinese philosophers who spoke about keeping in balance with nature. I want to find out who they were. I hope China can learn from the mistakes we in the US have made and are making.

@Jupitroid Zhou Xun’s values were not unheard of, they were just being reintroduced. China has always faced severe enviromental problems. But unlike Japan, being enviromental is just a theory widespread, but not well practiced. Turning off the lights is more of a common practice. Kids are often told not to leave the water in succession. Stores in China don’t leave their lights on overnight. Here in Canada (where ppl take things for granted), I get annoyed when I see light left on, water left in succession.

  • wuyiting says:

@Jupitroid well, you know China is a huge MALE smoking country, so it doesn’t really help, haha. They used to smoke the world over inside and out. Second-hand smokers get affected more easily, as you might already knwo that. Besides, China has issues of unbalanced ratio of genders. Heard that if women are held to be 100, men should be less than a 100. Now, the F:M ratio is 100:116.9, certain provinces has reached a shocking 100:138.

  • Jupitroid says:

@ wuyiting Thanks, I didn’t know that. It was the same way here in the West a long time ago. Those ancient values probably saved a lot of lives, even if they weren’t quite right sometimes. I like the new values like the ones Zhou Xun has. Be green, be healthy! :)

@Jupitroid I doubt it’s cigarettes, she always had such a voice since she was young, i.e. 13, 14 yrs ago. Chinese females genrally don’t smoke as much as men do. They were taught not to smoke because ancient values believed that smoking girls equate to terrible girls.

  • wuyiting says:

man, she altered my stance on her completely

  • HaamSapTjai says:

My god she has a sexy voice.

Does it really matter turning the lights off? I mean that’s the like the first thing people mention when they are doing the “what-I-do-to-save-the-world” talk.
Maybe it’s insignificant compared to let’s say driving, or factories with low energy conversion efficiency.
We need some data to break these conventional wisdom.
