No cabinet rift over Mau: Uhuru


www.ntv.co.ke A day after forestry and wildlife minister Noah Wekesa claimed not to be sure of the borders of the Mau Forest, finance minister Uhuru Kenyatta remains non-committal on whether the large tea plantations in the forest should be uprooted. Uhuru further denies any rifts in the cabinet on the Mau saga, claiming all ministers are united that Mau and other water towers in the country must be restored. Restoration of Mau is expected to enter the more difficult phase of evicting powerful individuals in both current and past governments who are said to own large tracts of land in the forest.

Thanks to a project run by the NGO Fauna and Flora International, (partially funded by UKaid from the Department for International Development, in conjunction with the World Bank’s Multi Donor Fund), young men from local villages are being trained to work as forestry rangers. Many of them have previously been involved in illegal logging. FFI are also working to help community members understand how to best protect the forest whilst providing economic benefits and and livelihood opportunities to local communities. The Aceh Forest and Environment Project protects the Leuser and Ulu Masen forest ecosystems form illegal logging. The 3.3 million hectare area in the northern part of Aceh province, is the largest contiguous forested area in South East Asia.
